I first met Tom Varano at a charity event in Bozeman, Montana.
My wife Barb and I had flown out from New York to support the cause. Tom was the featured performer, and what he did on that stage left the entire room speechless.
As powerful music filled the air, Tom began painting portraits upside down, blending storytelling, art, and emotion in a way I had never seen before.
Each brushstroke followed the rise and fall of the story he was telling.
Then, at exactly the right moment—when the music and message reached their emotional peak—he flipped the painting upright and revealed the face on the canvas.
The room erupted.
You could feel it—the connection, the inspiration, the impact.
Within minutes, people were bidding thousands of dollars for his paintings. Tom’s performance alone helped raise six figures for the charity that night.
After the show, we knew we had to meet him.
We tracked him down in the crowd, only to discover that he lived just an hour from us back home in New York.
I don’t believe that meeting was simply by chance.
Tom and I were meant to cross paths. Sometimes life connects the dots long before we understand why.
A Mission to Reach America’s Youth
As we got to know Tom, he shared what truly drives him.
His heart isn’t in the spotlight or on the corporate stages.
It’s in America’s classrooms.
Tom grew up through a difficult and, at times, traumatic childhood. Instead of allowing those experiences to define him, he turned them into a mission: using art to help young people overcome pain, bullying, self-doubt, and the feeling that nobody understands what they’re going through.
Through his program, Emotion Into Art, Tom travels to schools across the country, painting live while delivering a message of hope, compassion, courage, and personal worth.
My wife and I have sat in those school auditoriums and watched him work.
We’ve seen kids cry because, maybe for the first time, someone made them feel seen.
We’ve watched students raise their hands and admit they had been bullying others—and then publicly commit to changing.
We’ve watched teachers moved to tears by the power that art, honesty, and human connection can have on a young person.
That’s what makes Tom’s work different.
It isn’t just a performance.
It reaches people.
And Tom believes in the mission so deeply that he covers much of his own travel expenses and charges schools only a fraction of what his performance would command at a corporate event.
Those corporate performances help make the school programs possible.
But his bigger dream is simple:
To perform for free in schools across America and reach every student who needs to hear his message.
And maybe that’s the part of Tom’s story that has stayed with me the most.
He took some of the hardest parts of his own life and turned them into something that could help someone else.
There’s a lesson in that for all of us.
We don’t get to choose every hardship that comes our way. We don’t get to rewrite the difficult chapters that are already behind us.
But we do get to decide what we do with them.
Pain can make us bitter, or it can give us purpose.
Struggle can become an excuse, or it can become something we use to serve others.
Tom chose purpose.
And every time he stands in front of a room full of kids, picks up a paintbrush, and tells them that their story isn’t over, he proves what can happen when one person decides to turn his scars into something good.
There’s plenty in this world that can make us cynical.
But there are also people quietly doing meaningful work every single day—helping kids, strengthening communities, encouraging people, and making this country a little better than they found it.
That’s the America I still believe in.
